Bigger and Better than You

<<< Back to Sports Psychology Advice Index

From a very young age we are competitive. You may remember in the playground hearing or even saying things similar to,” My dad’s car is faster than your dads or my bike has 18 gears not just 12 like yours!”

win your race with Q4Sport

The one that remains with me is the amount of times we raced as a bet to the other end of the playground!

Without even realising it we are competing against each other and learning how it makes us feel and winning often makes us feel better than losing. Losing however, is it really that bad?

We can’t be perfect ALL the time and even the top sports personalities have times when even they could have done better. Even at the top of their chosen sport they are still learning, developing new skills/techniques and gaining experience.

Believe it or not Losing can sometimes be better than Winning!

The experience of losing to a better team or player could benefit you more than you think and in the long-run improve your whole performance in the sport you love.

You will have the ability to:

  • Reflect on the experience, in your mind
  • Analyse if it went wrong and where
  • Train on the specific points
  • Plan a stronger strategy for next time

Remember practice doesn’t make perfect….it makes permanent! So the next time you hear, “I’ll bet you I can do this better than you,” Say OK! Because win or lose, you know that every experience is going to help you with your development for the next time.
