Taken from the recently published Practical Coaching Sessions - Advanced Technical and Team Play - Digilog - 60 pages with over 40 printable sessions

Movement to exploit & create spaceOrganisation: Area of play: 70 yrds x 50 yrds.

Equipment: 2 goals, cones, bibs & footballs placed at convenient points.

Start: Opposition (red) midfield plays ball into Opposition forward - coach observes what happens when team being coached (blue)regain possession.

Key Factors:

  • Once possession is regained do players react by creating space by early movement into intelligent space
  • If space is created in the defending third be careful of exposing heart of defence, players must know and understand their role in the team
  • Good communication lines especially from GK will assist defenders decision making
  • Does the player in good possession use good vision to select the best option being made available
  • Individual players if tightly marked - movement to create space - movement to exploit space
  • Space created - ball delivered - player arrives
  • Understanding between units of players - patterns of play
  • Furthest attacker must always be in a position to attack or hold possession
  • Body stance of player receiving the ball must if possible be half turned:
    • To see a bigger picture
    • To see the ball and opponent
    • To see the ball & end product - player or goal
  • Runs to create space:
    • Inside to out
    • Outside to in
    • Overlap runs
    • Cross overs
    • Diagonal runs
  • Quality of:
    • The timing of the run or movement made
    • The first touch of player receiving
    • The quality and timing of the pass or attempt to score
  • Patterns of play must begin to be established between groups of players
